Of course, as I never tire of saying to people, we have stories, and share stories with each other, but freedom, awakening, or enlightenment is not being defined by the stories we have. Rather, it is realizing our true nature as awareness, consciousness, or being itself—that which creates the stories, and the experience of being in this body, mind, and personality called “us.”
“Born in Europe, Jean studied music in Vienna, fought in the French resistance during the Second World War, and became a naturopathic physician. But he always had a passionate interest in truth, in a way of living free of the materialistic addiction sweeping Europe after the war. As a result, he spent a number of years in India studying with several spiritual masters.
“In time, he became a master in his own right, a skilled exponent of Advaita Vedanta. This is the enlightenment tradition known as the “direct path” or the nondual path because it points directly to consciousness, to the one energy which is our true nature.
“Jean was an urbane, cultured, and intellectually sophisticated man. Even though he was in some ways detached from the normal hurly-burly of the marketplace and had more of a mountaintop teacher’s style about him, he was still in the world. He wasn’t a white-robed, celibate, ascetic teacher completely withdrawn from everyday life. He enjoyed the finer things in life. While he could sometimes be aloof, he remained one of us.
“As a result of carefully reading Jean’s books, attending a few of his workshops, listening to his talks and dialogues, and spending a little private time with him, I finally “got” what he was saying. He passed on to me, through his words and through the clarity and power of his presence, the ultimate understanding of Advaita—and, indeed, of all authentic teachings about awakening—which is that there is no independent entity called “I” or “me.”
“The "me," with all its history and drama, doesn't exist, except as an idea, a story, a fabrication between our ears.”
Love and blessings,
Jim

What People Are Saying About Jim's Work
"Jim’s teaching is most similar to Eckhart Tolle, but unlike Tolle, who had an unexpected spontaneous awakening, Jim’s awakening came after years of spiritual seeking. His book, End Your Story, Begin Your Life, makes his teaching easy to relate to and his guidance down to earth and helpful"
Lyra Mayfield & Charlie Stein, Boulder, CO
"I am really appreciating the practice of stepping back with my awareness. It is simple, powerful, and amazingly effective at releasing stress and emotional tension. In fact, it is magical! Thank you!"
Anne Beversdorf, Austin, TX
"You completely changed my life. I have practiced your work for over a year. I now realize that I chose to be a victim. No one ever opened the world of wisdom like you."
Jan Hamilton, Ph.D., Aspen, CO
"There is a very deep presence that has stayed with me after working with you. I am more easily able to come back to the sanctuary of the present than before."
Erik Ossell, Big Sur, CA
“My experience of Jim was remarkable… Every time I felt conflicted I did as he suggested, and felt a sense of freedom from the story and from the emotional upset. It was profound.”
Truth Paradise, Aspen, CO
“As a result of Jim’s guidance I have really experienced a much deeper sense of my Being, and feel I am on the threshold of living the freedom he has modeled for me.”
Juliana Dahl, Ph.D., Boulder, CO
